HSP Seminar (#304) “Myanmar and the Future of Human Security” (Apr. 28, 2023)

Title Myanmar and the Future of Human Security
Descriptions The reversal of democratization in Myanmar due to a military coup, and the repression of citizens who resist through the Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM) has continued for over two years, and the situation continues to worsen. In this seminar, we will consider what is necessary in this situation to ensure human security. This is a question not only for the Human Security Program (HSP) of the University of Tokyo Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, which advocates for Human Security, but also for the Japanese government and the international community, with the United Nations at its core.

Due to current global events, including the situation in Ukraine, it is difficult to maintain the attention of international society towards Myanmar. However, for Japan, an Asian country, Myanmar is a familiar and deeply-rooted issue that invokes historical responsibility. In 2013, Aung San Suu Kyi, a symbolic figure of democratization, gave a lecture at the University of Tokyo, speaking of her determination for democratization and providing a passionate message to the people of Japan. As a result of hasty globalization, the world remains divided and conflicted, and the number of refugees and internally displaced persons is breaking records every year. With the cooperation of HSP colleagues who aim to tackle global issues, and the Department of Area Studies, which focuses on history, culture, society, economy, politics, legal norms, languages, geography, international relations, etc. of global regions, we discuss the future of Human Security. Alongside refugees from Myanmar and other countries, we invite you to directly hear their unheard voices, see from a bird’s eye or ant’s eye view, and take this opportunity for us to think, consider, and act together.
