Title “Human Rights in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea by UN OHCHR”
Descriptions We will be welcoming James Heenan, representative from OHCHR Seoul Office to present their most recent report, Situation of Human Rights in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (A/HRC/60/58), submitted to the UN Human Rights Council in September 2025. Together with moderator Professor Ai Kihara-Hunt, we will explore key findings from over a decade of documentation, including the tightening of state control, persistence of political prison camps, enforced disappearances, and the erosion of fundamental freedoms in the DPRK. We will also reflect on the international community’s role in accountability and engagement. This event is open to the public by prior registration only. Please note that should the event reach full capacity, priority may be given to students of this university. Event details will be communicated via email to those who have registered.

Descriptions We will be welcoming Dr. Natsuki Katayama from Tsuru University of Arts and Sciences to discuss her newly published book, The Gacaca Courts in Rwanda: Dialogue on Reparations for Victims and Perpetrators of Genocide. Together with moderator Professor Ai Kihara-Hunt, we will delve into the Gacaca Courts—which adjudicated genocide at the local level—and explore the human dimensions of “crime and punishment”. Title The Future of Peacekeeping, New Models and Related Capabilities, Launch of the Japanese version
Descriptions In October 2024, “The Future of Peacekeeping, New Models and Related Capabilities” was launched by the Independent Study Team (El-Ghassim Wang, Paul Williams and Ai Kihara Hunt), commissioned by the UN Department of Peace Operations, initiated by Germany, the host of the UN Peacekeeping Operations Ministerial Conference to be held on 13-14 May 2025. Research Center for Sustainable Peace, the Univerisyt of Tokyo, translated the Study into Japanese. This seminar is a launch event for the Japanese version of the Independent Study, and will have Mr. El-Gassim Wane, team leader of the Study team, and Professor Kihara-Hunt, author of the Study and responsible for the Japanese translation, as well as comments by experts and participants and a Q&A session.

Title America’s Unifying Role in a Turbulent World – 緒方貞子の副官、アメリカを語る
Descriptions Rick Barton, the last deputy to Sadako Ogata of UNHCR, pioneered, throughout his career at the USAID, State Department, the CSIS, and Princeton University, in how to prevent, shorten, mitigate, emerge from and rebuild after conflicts. Embodying the America the world used to know, he provides unique answers to compelling questions: How has the United States engaged in world conflict zones? Why should we?

Title Reconstruction” Under Fire: the Role of the International Community in Support for Ukraine
Descriptions Mr. Tim Lardner, Regional Director for Europe and Central Asia of the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), will speak about the current status of support and reconstruction efforts in Ukraine. UNOPS is a UN agency specializing in infrastructure, procurement, and project management, and has implemented numerous development and peacebuilding projects in challenging operational environments, such as conflict zones and post-disaster areas. In this seminar, Mr. Lardner, who had led the UNOPS Ukraine office on the ground, will report on how UN agencies are implementing projects in Ukraine, which is still in the midst of war.

Title 20th Anniversary Symposium of Human Security Program “Towards a More People-Centered Global Society”
Descriptions The Human Security Programme (HSP) was established in 2002 with the aim of developing human resources capable of researching human security issues and actively working towards practical solutions, all in the pursuit of a peaceful society in which every individual can live in safety.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the programme. To mark this milestone, we are honoured to host a symposium with Ms. Izumi Nakamitsu, United Nations Under-Secretary-General, as our guest speaker. The event will provide an opportunity to reflect on the progress made in the field of human security and to explore future prospects. Further details will be sent through emails to the registers.
