HSP Seminar no.130 Human Trafficking in the Great Mekong Sub-region: Modern Day Slavery Revealed

Each day, countless men, women and children around the world suffer in horrific slave-like conditions. Whether it be a teenage boy forced to work 19 hour shifts on a fishing boat in foreign seas, a woman forced to have sex with up to ten strangers every night, or a child sold into a sweat shop to make electronic components for an unscrupulous sub-contractor, each day these real-life dramas play out in all our countries. Globally, it is estimated that there are over 27 million enslaved persons, with about half in Asia alone.

Matthew Friedman, a United Nations international expert in human trafficking, will provide a comprehensive overview of the human trafficking problem throughout Asia. What it is, how it works and what is being done to address it. His presentation will focus on what governments and civil society are doing and how effective this work has been up until now and challenges forwards.

Mr. Friedman is an international human trafficking expert with over 20 years of experience as an activist, program designer, evaluator and manager. He is currently the Regional Project Manager of the United Nations Inter-Agency Project on Human Trafficking (UNIAP) in Bangkok, Thailand. UNIAP is managed by a headquarters in Bangkok, with country project offices in the capitals of Cambodia, China, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam. It represents one of the world’s largest inter-agency coordinating body on human trafficking linking the United Nations system with governments, civil society and private groups in the region and beyond.

HSP Seminar no.127 Helping Small Farmers in Nigeria through Agricultural Cooperatives: Lessons from Japan Agricultural Cooperative Model

Agricultural cooperative known as JA in Japan is the citadel of small farmers’ livelihoods. For almost 60 years, JA was the driving force behind small farmer-supportive policy in Japan. The reverse is the case in Nigeria where agricultural cooperatives are not tailored towards organized support; thereby farmers are faced with production challenges not known to JA members. While there are emerging challenges for JA, its relevance remains undaunted in marketing, farm guidance, credit, insurance, and subsidy among others. The paper examines the need for adapting the JA agricultural cooperative model in Nigeria and the needed institutional contexts.

HSP Seminar no.121 Governance and Rule of Law Post-Disasters

The catastrophic Tohoku earthquake, tsunami and nuclear power crisis reminded us that such seismic events might not be metaphorical but, as in the original meaning, geological. However, it is increasingly recognized that the response requires not merely a massive reconstruction effort but a fundamental review of its governance structures to look at how they operate under stress as well as under ‘normal’ conditions. Hurricane Katrina and the recent Australian bushfires and floods demonstrate that these are issues in developed as well as developing countries.

These issues suggest the need for a deep re-assessment of the very basic value systems of the people of Japan and of all global citizens. It will require active international dialogue on the question of global values, international rule of law, global governance and the institutional requirements that need to go hand in hand with globalisation.

This seminar explores the challenges of governance and rule of law post-disasters and looks specifically at the issue of responsible aid relief responses; sustainable and safe energy choices; and the collaborative effort needed between government, business and NGOs.

In the face of the serious challenges facing Japan, this Seminar is a timely examination of the crucial issues of ethics, rule of law, accountability, transparency and sustainability of aid resourcing and delivery that is associated particularly with disaster management and reconstruction and in which business plays an increasingly significant role.

This Seminar welcomes representative from private sector enterprises, government organisations, the academic community and aid agencies as well as members of civil society.

HSP Spring Symposium 2010 V The “Nuclear Pacific” Now: Effects, Action, and Passing on to Future Generations

50 years have passed since France began nuclear testing in the Pacific. The nuclear victims of Tahiti, including former test site workers, are now conducting health and environmental research of their land and asking for compensation from the French government.
We are welcoming a group from Tahiti including members of “Moruroa e Tatou”, a Tahitian NGO which fights for the victims of Tahitian nuclear victims, and a related youth organization, as well as Tahitian students, who will travel to Japan onboard Peace Boat. During their stay from January 18-23, they will visit Tokyo, Hiroshima, and Nagasaki to learn about the activities of Japanese Hibakusha and about peace education. On January 23, they will depart onboard Peace Boat’s 72nd Voyage to participate in the fourth “Global Voyage for a Nuclear-Free World: Peace Boat Hibakusha Project,” where they will join Japanese Hibakusha and high school student Peace Ambassadors.
During their stay in Tokyo, an open symposium will be held as follows.
The symposium will also welcome a former fisherman of the Daigo Fukuryu Maru (Lucky Dragon Number Five) fishing boat and an Australian aboriginal anti-uranium mining activist as guest speakers (TBC). The nuclear age, since the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, has created countless Hibakusha in many levels of the nuclear chain. This symposium will take a close look at the contemporary reality. It will especially focus on how the younger generation can carry over these tasks, and so will feature reports on the youth movement and education, followed by discussion.
