HSP Spring Symposium 2010 V A New Approach to a World without Nuclear Weapons

With the NPT Review Conference coming up in May, discussions around nuclear disarmament are reaching their peak in Japan as well as internationally.
In order to realise a ‘world without nuclear weapons’, transcending the conventional discussions of nuclear deterrence and the nuclear umbrella, the world is now in need of a new approach based on a shift in perceptions.
This symposium will feature Professor Tsuchiyama Hideo, former president of Nagasaki University and one of the most well-known opinion leaders of nuclear disarmament, as well as academics and young NGO representatives, to discuss the kind of new approach that should be taken. We are also inviting Mr Malcolm Fraser, former Prime Minister of Australia, who is now visiting Hiroshima for the InterAction Council meeting of former heads of state on nuclear disarmament.
A documentary film about 103 Hibakusha (A-bomb survivors) traveling around the world onboard Peace Boat to deliver messages of nuclear disarmament will be screened in the evening, followed by a talk by Erika Bagnarello of Costa Rica, director of the film.
